About

The maps on this site show the countries, states and counties colored by cases per million people. The more cases per million people, the darker the color. If a place has no data, it is displayed as grey. You can hover over or click countries/states to see the numbers.

The maps use the same scale, so you can compare US states or counties with countries of the world.

There's a maximum cases-per-million used in the chart. When a country or whatever exceeds the maximum, it is still displayed, but the color cannot be made any stronger.

Some countries, like the Vatican, are too small to display on the map. You can still see their data though if you click on the "Table" view.

Release Notes

Nov 28, 2022 Fixed some memory leaks that were causing slowness.

Jan 9, 2022 Removed Excess map for now, because the data is old. May revive it later.

Aug 15, 2021 Removed Active maps because there isn't good enough data for them. Fixed some instabilities having to do with downloads.

Mar 23, 2021 Added a new map! The excess deaths per million per state measures how many died in 2020 vs. the 2014-2019 average (per million).

Jan 30, 2021 Display the raw total along with the total/million. Charts page turned into spinning globe.

Jan 25, 2021 Fixed a bunch of special cases having to do with territories and such.

Jan 12, 2021 Some of the limits have been changed so that fewer places exceed them.

Jan 1, 2021 State actives are displaying again.

Dec 31, 2020 The active cases per day can be negative. The map now uses a different color for the negative numbers.

Dec 28, 2020 Minor UI changes.

Dec 27, 2020 A few bug fixes. Moved "Overview" to be "Charts", and not have it be the default anymore.

Dec 26, 2020 New UI!

Dec 23, 2020 The global charts were too slow, so they've been removed for now.

Dec 22, 2020 The default view is daily changes now, versus totals. Updated the scale a bit. Disabled state actives, tested and recovered temporarily until a bug there can be fixed.

Oct 29, 2020 The scale was changed to keep up with the increasing number of cases.

Sep 16, 2020 The hospitalization numbers are not being reported anymore by JHU, so they've been removed them from the maps.

Aug 5, 2020 Hong Kong and Macau are counted as countries now, though only visible in the table because they are so small. French Guiana is a part of France, and not a territory (did you know?). They have combined numbers now.

Jul 31, 2020 I refactored the code to make it more efficient. It should be a bit speedier than before.

Jul 22, 2020 Bug fixes. Some counties in Utah and NYC were not displaying correct numbers. Many Utah counties do not report individually, but as a group. NYC is actually 5 counties. The code to account for this was broken, but has now been fixed.

Jul 9, 2020 Added a "daily" checkbox to show a smoothed daily chart when hovering over places. Made the table button a checkbox also.

Jul 1, 2020 Added actives, tested and hospitalized for states.

Jun 13, 2020 Using D3 library to create maps now, instead of Landline/Stateline and Google Maps. Easier to navigate UI.

May 17, 2020 Added charts to counties (by area) also.

May 16, 2020 Added charts to states also.

May 11, 2020 Added charts to the Country Cases and Deaths. Charts display on map, not table anymore.

May 3, 2020 Added charts to the Country Actives table.

April 29, 2020 I doubled all the limits on the charts, because too many places, like NYC, were overflowing the limits by a lot.

April 28, 2020 Added a table view. You can toggle between that and map view.

April 26, 2020 Fixed some issues with the county map tooltips. Added a button to show growth from a time period.

April 21, 2020 The site has a new frontend and is no longer running off of Google Sites. It's a little faster and smoother this way. Hope you like it.

April 15, 2020 There was a small outage because the supplier of Covid data (Johns Hopkins) changed their data file format, probably unintentionally. Added workarounds and it should be fixed, for now.

April 14, 2020 Added button to go to previous weeks or days.   Added country actives map.

April 10, 2020 The maps load even faster now.

April 9, 2020 The maps should load a little faster now.

April 6, 2020 Added death maps for states and counties.  Added "Open in new tab" button, which lets you navigate the maps more easily.

April 5, 2020 Added new country deaths map.

April 4, 2020 Added new county map with population bubbles.

April 3, 2020 The limit for coloring the maps used to be 5,000 cases per million, and above that it wouldn't draw the state or country.  New York is now over 5000 cases per million, so the limit has been raised to 10,000 cases per million.  Also, the charts will still display the state or country now when they go over the limit, with the maximum color.

April 2, 2020 The US County map has been added.  Consider it new and experimental.  It doesn't quite work the way the other two do, because it isn't using the Google Charts API, because Google Charts has no support for counties unfortunately.

www.covidmaps.site is a new domain name for this site. It's easier to remember and will be the official name from now on.
